Reflective Journal
3rd semester (June)

I iteratively conducted research during this month.
First of all, I reviewed research data taken from the second semester which includes videos, in-depth interview, and literature. I reviewed my context issue and root causes of the problem by doing open coding and axial coding. Most amateur golfers try to keep the golf etiquette while playing golf. However, problems were found to be the most identified problems in Korea golf field. 1) Fake, 2) Shout, and 3) Delay.
First of all, some amateur golfers tend to fake other players to get the win and look professional. For instance, if somebody loses the golf ball on the golf course, s/he could pretend not to lose the ball by putting the ball on the golf course naturally. Secondly, sometimes amateur golfers have a tendency to shout in the golf course according to their emotion. For example, if someone makes a hole in one, s/he might be yell because s/he gets so excited. On the contrary, if someone does double par in an easy situation, s/he might yell because s/he gets so angry. Lastly, most amateur golfers tend to delay of game progress. There are two reasons for delaying of the game progress. 1) They just focus on their shot or swing. If their swing tempo is very slow, the pace of play cannot help delaying. 2) They try to hit a ball as many as possible. If they hit a ball many times, the pace of play cannot also help delaying. This is why caddies need while playing golf on the golf course.
These three things are the context problems on the golf course. Moreover, it is linked to the lack of the education of golf etiquette. There are three root causes which are non-systematic etiquette education, weak of the learning stages, and the lack of time of golf practice in junior golf education. I figured it out by doing open coding. Regarding non-systematic etiquette, for example, the golf class in the Gong-Chinuen-Ie academy emphasis on practical lesson rather than etiquette lesson. Even there is etiquette lesson, the instructor teaches students to golf etiquette verbally during the practical lesson.
On the second place, I did questionnaire about awareness of golf etiquette for about sixteen amateur golfers in Golf fair in Kintex. According to the questionnaire, 96% of people considered golf etiquette as important, yet 18.8% of amateur golfers has not been learning golf etiquette. Even though 81.3% of people had learned golf etiquette, all people responded that just learned verbally. Also, 87.5% people answered that golf etiquette could impact on developing personality, 93.8% of people responded that golf etiquette could help them to develop the relationship as well as social life. By asking awareness of golf etiquette, I could double checked that there is little systematic of education of golf etiquette. I insist that it is important for junior and amateur golfers to teach golf etiquette. Because learning golf etiquette is necessary for the junior in the beginning stage of golf education as well as the period of growth. Third, I could choose concept by doing selective coding. The concept is communication with friends and tutors by using VR goggles. As I mentioned last reflective journal, people could change their behavior by using smart devices in education situation, such as smartphones, computers, and VR goggles because we can learn a lot of indirect experience through those smart devices. Especially, there are three advantages in VR goggles. First of all, we can see the real situation. For instance, when we watch golf swing on the video, we cannot watch opposite view. However, we can see all of the views through the VR device in real. Also, it helps us to understand better. It is necessary for junior golfers to understand better what the golf etiquette is. On the second place, we can save time. For instance, if we want to play golf on the golf course, we have to spend 7 hours including travel time. However, the VR goggles make junior golfers save time as well as satisfy. During my research, over 50% of students were unsatisfied with playing golf in the indoor golf range because of very bored. Most Korean junior golfers are very hard to play golf on the golf course due to the cost and time. They have to go academy after school every day, and their parents do not have a chance to play with them because of their job. This is why they tend to play golf in indoor golf range inevitably. Lastly, junior golfers could learn golf etiquette in the safety situation. As I mentioned, 81.3% of golfers learn about golf etiquette during the practical lesson in verbally. However, we cannot expect the danger during the practical lesson. For example, when a golf instructor teaches students to golf swing and golf etiquette at the same time, students might be hit by a golf club. According to one reference, 86.4% of 309 children are hurt by golf equipment during playing golf (Fradkin, Cameron, and Gabbe, 2005). However, if they use the VR goggles to learn golf etiquette as well as how to do golf swing, it will be much safer.
Lastly, I have been trying to make a prototype. I designed app roughly, and one of the stages in the app could connect with VR goggles. There are three menus in the app which is before playing golf, while playing golf, and after playing golf. I designed it by thinking golfers’ experience on the golf course. And then I took a golf seminar which collaborates with anatomy for asking the prototype. Most golfers are interested in how to play golf well. I felt that still nobody emphasis on golf etiquette. They just stress on the golf swing. However, this seminar was not only useful but also helpful in terms of preventing injury and right golf swing posture. Instructors insisted that the way to teach playing golf have to change by focusing people’s different types of muscle. Although this is the only physical issue, customizing teaching method could apply to the education of golf etiquette. After the seminar, I asked two golf instructors to my prototype. They liked it. The first instructor told me that it could make children more concentration on playing golf than screen golf. Because VR goggles are more immersive than any other education tools by putting on their eyes. This is the reason why, for junior, the screen golf cannot concentrate on playing golf not that much, yet VR goggles could make them more focus on the lesson. The other instructor told me that this device could use analyzing the golf swing. There is a just video to analysis golf swing. The video only can see one side view. However, VR can see all side of the golf swing. Ultimately, golf instructors could do analysis various kinds of the side of the golf swing. The evaluation of the prototype was positive.
In summary, I analyzed the video that I took last semester by using open coding, axial coding, and selective coding. Also, I found a concept that is communication with friends and instructors in terms of golf context by doing selective coding. Next, I made prototype roughly and did test with two golf instructors in the golf seminar. The test was successful. However, I have to make the prototype in detail. I will make the prototype in detail and storytelling of my project.

User test_01. Attend a Golf&Anatomy seminar

I attended a golf seminar collaborate with anatomy. There are two experts of golf and one doctor. Basically, this seminar did not only focus on golf swing but also, introducing amateur golfers to the right posture of the golf swing to prevent injury. Two golf instructors insist that mostly golf instructors teach amateur golfers to wrong way. Because they do not know what the anatomy is. This is why golf instructors have to learn anatomy first and teach them to right way by focusing on their different body structure, such as different types of muscle, bone, length of arms and so on.
After the seminar, I showed two golf instructors my rough prototype. They really liked it. Especially, when they put the VR goggles on, one instructor told me that is very helpful for junior. Because the VR goggles could make children to more concentrate on the situation than screen golf. The other instructor told me that is so awesome and it could use to analysis golf swing. Because the VR goggles provide us with all side of views.
If the VR goggles use in the education of golf etiquette for about around 5 minutes of an hour, I think most children will be concentrating on it as well as understand easily what the golf etiquette is.

Idea sketch_01

According to Persuasive Stanford Lab., HCI which means Human computer Interaction could make people's behaviour to change easily as well as effective. Among those theory, I chose VR technology in order to better understand of golf etiquette for junior in real environment. Also, I have been trying to draw character because character is more friendly than luxury design.
I just focus on how to design an golf application and VR technology.

Open coding

I could better understand the root cause in terms of golf education for junior by doing open coding. There are four categories of root cause which are the problem, teaching methods, self-control, and consideration.

<Problem>

<Teaching methods>

<Self-control and Consideration>

<The whole of graph>

When those categories combine into one graph, the factor of communication with others could handle with all of the factors in the graph. For example, if solve the communication problem, it could solve self-control as well as respect for other people. Also, people could be motivated by solving the communication problem. In addition, unstructured education of golf etiquette problem would be solved.

Visiting golf fair in Kintex.

I visited golf fair in Kintex to ask amateur golfers to awareness of golf etiquette. I asked 16 amateur golfers to the cognizance of golf etiquette.

미 공화당 대선후보 트럼프의 악명 높은 골프장 매너…"골프장에선 뻔뻔한 거짓말쟁이" 폭로

(Trump is a liar on the golf course)

This article introduces the bad golf manner of trump who is a republican presidential candidate in the States. Oscar De La Hoya who is one of the famous boxers on the planet has played golf with Trump. Oscar said that trump is a liar. Trump has been faked during playing golf. Oscar said, "I saw his ball flown out of the golf course, but he pretended not to lose his ball by putting another golf ball, so I'm not going to vote him".
I could see that the golf etiquette concern with the social problem through this article.

CA + TED square design conference.

I went to the Kookmin University to take a CA & TED square Design conference which cooperate between Kookmin Uni. in TED square Lab and CA design magazine last Saturday. There were four sessions from 11:00 to 17:00.
The first lecture was how to deal with future of Korea design. He told us what do we have to design by following the process that is before, during and the future of the reunification of North and South Korea.
The second lecture was expanding new media communication by technology by Hunchul Jeon who is CEO in an advertisement company. He told us that the importance of design thinking as well as deign technology. It was impressed his design thinking process that is what to say, how to say, and how to be touched. If we create something for the user, we should consider user needs. "The user needs" comes from listening and watching their behavior. If we want to change user behavior, we should consider how to convey the fill the requirement of design to the user by using technology (his example was an advertisement).
The third lecture was the power of imagination, and motion graphic design by Wonsuk Lee who is CEO in an advertisement company. He mentioned that is a sense of dynamics, timing, and a sense of rhythm in the process of making media.
The last lecture was interaction design by Jihong Jung who is a professor at the Kookmin University. He strongly insisted that HCI which means Human-Computer Interaction has been developing, and it is very helpful us to change our behavior positively. The device has been developing smart, such as intelligence computer. And he consisted that the future of design could focus on change human behavior and attitude by using new technology, such as IN-body sensor.

I also think that design should change human's behavior and attitude by using technology. In terms of education of golf etiquette for junior, I'm sure that junior's behavior could change positively by using technology and design. My current problem is how to be touched the aspect of golf context.

 What to say & How to say : Message of listening and watching.
 How to be touched : Message of experience.

Context issue in golf.

Most amateur golfers try to keep the golf etiquette during playing golf. However, there are three big problems on the golf course.
1)Fake other players.
2)Shout in the golf course.
3)Delay of the golf play.
For example, if someone success putting the golf ball on the hole cup at a time in the difficult situation, s/he might yell because s/he gets so excited. On the contrary, if someone success putting the golf ball on the hole cup in many times in the easy situation, s/he might yell because s/he gets so angry. Lastly, most amateur golfers tend to delay of game progress. There are two reasons for delaying of the game progress. 1)They just focus on their shot or swing. If their swing tempo is very slow, the pace of play cannot help delaying. 2)They try to hit a ball as many as possible. If they hit a ball a lot of times, the pace of play cannot also help delaying. This is why caddies need during playing golf on the golf course.
These three things are big context problems on the golf course. And, it is linked with the lack of the education of golf etiquette.

Supervisor's comment and change the plan.

There are many supervisors comment in week1.

-Main supervisor-
1)Organizing exists thesis of golf etiquette to better educate for the junior.
2)Build a scenario according to types of etiquette to better educate for the junior.
3)Propose the scenario by designing a device and interface to achieve effectively.
4)The aim of the study, target, core contents of design, conclusion, and meaning of design should be described by consistent subject, research methods and materials.
He recommended me to find the clear reason of aim of the study.

 -Sub supervisor-
1)She recommended me to write the whole process of research to remind my study, and try to put prove where came from.
2)Writing all words of definition is helpful me to understand where I am.

There is a few comment in week2.

-Main supervisor-
1)Hard to understand cause and effect.
2)Try to approach the aspect of design.

As a result, I have been thinking about what is design in terms of academic. But I cannot understand what is different between academic design and normal design. Supervisor told me that my study is never considered academic things. I think design have to approach more nature than other fields, such as marketing and economy. Also, design has not to make the boundary of all of the parts. For example, physical education could be a part of design. Because the education can be changed people's behavior by introducing a management health app. This is why my study could be a part of design. Design include all of the parts. There is no limitation of the design power.

Next step will organize definition again, and do ideation.

Thinking tree

I organized my study by using thinking tree. At the beginning of the stage, I thought why do we have to teach golf education to junior. Next, I thought how to apply design to golf education. I found music, colors, and characters in golf context which linked with the design. Ultimately, even there are a lot of factors in the golf education context, behavior change has to be considered in golf education as well as attitude, and achievement.
