I iteratively conducted research during this month.
First of all, I reviewed research data taken from the second semester which includes videos, in-depth interview, and literature. I reviewed my context issue and root causes of the problem by doing open coding and axial coding. Most amateur golfers try to keep the golf etiquette while playing golf. However, problems were found to be the most identified problems in Korea golf field. 1) Fake, 2) Shout, and 3) Delay.
First of all, some amateur golfers tend to fake other players to get the win and look professional. For instance, if somebody loses the golf ball on the golf course, s/he could pretend not to lose the ball by putting the ball on the golf course naturally. Secondly, sometimes amateur golfers have a tendency to shout in the golf course according to their emotion. For example, if someone makes a hole in one, s/he might be yell because s/he gets so excited. On the contrary, if someone does double par in an easy situation, s/he might yell because s/he gets so angry. Lastly, most amateur golfers tend to delay of game progress. There are two reasons for delaying of the game progress. 1) They just focus on their shot or swing. If their swing tempo is very slow, the pace of play cannot help delaying. 2) They try to hit a ball as many as possible. If they hit a ball many times, the pace of play cannot also help delaying. This is why caddies need while playing golf on the golf course.
These three things are the context problems on the golf course. Moreover, it is linked to the lack of the education of golf etiquette. There are three root causes which are non-systematic etiquette education, weak of the learning stages, and the lack of time of golf practice in junior golf education. I figured it out by doing open coding. Regarding non-systematic etiquette, for example, the golf class in the Gong-Chinuen-Ie academy emphasis on practical lesson rather than etiquette lesson. Even there is etiquette lesson, the instructor teaches students to golf etiquette verbally during the practical lesson.
On the second place, I did questionnaire about awareness of golf etiquette for about sixteen amateur golfers in Golf fair in Kintex. According to the questionnaire, 96% of people considered golf etiquette as important, yet 18.8% of amateur golfers has not been learning golf etiquette. Even though 81.3% of people had learned golf etiquette, all people responded that just learned verbally. Also, 87.5% people answered that golf etiquette could impact on developing personality, 93.8% of people responded that golf etiquette could help them to develop the relationship as well as social life. By asking awareness of golf etiquette, I could double checked that there is little systematic of education of golf etiquette. I insist that it is important for junior and amateur golfers to teach golf etiquette. Because learning golf etiquette is necessary for the junior in the beginning stage of golf education as well as the period of growth. Third, I could choose concept by doing selective coding. The concept is communication with friends and tutors by using VR goggles. As I mentioned last reflective journal, people could change their behavior by using smart devices in education situation, such as smartphones, computers, and VR goggles because we can learn a lot of indirect experience through those smart devices. Especially, there are three advantages in VR goggles. First of all, we can see the real situation. For instance, when we watch golf swing on the video, we cannot watch opposite view. However, we can see all of the views through the VR device in real. Also, it helps us to understand better. It is necessary for junior golfers to understand better what the golf etiquette is. On the second place, we can save time. For instance, if we want to play golf on the golf course, we have to spend 7 hours including travel time. However, the VR goggles make junior golfers save time as well as satisfy. During my research, over 50% of students were unsatisfied with playing golf in the indoor golf range because of very bored. Most Korean junior golfers are very hard to play golf on the golf course due to the cost and time. They have to go academy after school every day, and their parents do not have a chance to play with them because of their job. This is why they tend to play golf in indoor golf range inevitably. Lastly, junior golfers could learn golf etiquette in the safety situation. As I mentioned, 81.3% of golfers learn about golf etiquette during the practical lesson in verbally. However, we cannot expect the danger during the practical lesson. For example, when a golf instructor teaches students to golf swing and golf etiquette at the same time, students might be hit by a golf club. According to one reference, 86.4% of 309 children are hurt by golf equipment during playing golf (Fradkin, Cameron, and Gabbe, 2005). However, if they use the VR goggles to learn golf etiquette as well as how to do golf swing, it will be much safer.
Lastly, I have been trying to make a prototype. I designed app roughly, and one of the stages in the app could connect with VR goggles. There are three menus in the app which is before playing golf, while playing golf, and after playing golf. I designed it by thinking golfers’ experience on the golf course. And then I took a golf seminar which collaborates with anatomy for asking the prototype. Most golfers are interested in how to play golf well. I felt that still nobody emphasis on golf etiquette. They just stress on the golf swing. However, this seminar was not only useful but also helpful in terms of preventing injury and right golf swing posture. Instructors insisted that the way to teach playing golf have to change by focusing people’s different types of muscle. Although this is the only physical issue, customizing teaching method could apply to the education of golf etiquette. After the seminar, I asked two golf instructors to my prototype. They liked it. The first instructor told me that it could make children more concentration on playing golf than screen golf. Because VR goggles are more immersive than any other education tools by putting on their eyes. This is the reason why, for junior, the screen golf cannot concentrate on playing golf not that much, yet VR goggles could make them more focus on the lesson. The other instructor told me that this device could use analyzing the golf swing. There is a just video to analysis golf swing. The video only can see one side view. However, VR can see all side of the golf swing. Ultimately, golf instructors could do analysis various kinds of the side of the golf swing. The evaluation of the prototype was positive.
In summary, I analyzed the video that I took last semester by using open coding, axial coding, and selective coding. Also, I found a concept that is communication with friends and instructors in terms of golf context by doing selective coding. Next, I made prototype roughly and did test with two golf instructors in the golf seminar. The test was successful. However, I have to make the prototype in detail. I will make the prototype in detail and storytelling of my project.
